Sainsbury's shopper's Christmas kindness brings mum to tears

A mum from Surrey was brought to tears, thanks to one shopper's act of kindness.

Hayley Millward was shopping at a nearby Sainsbury's with her two children, when a fellow customers noticed that her 7-year-old was looking at a Christmas gift to buy his mum.

Her son Josh had spent weeks saving up his pocket money from his grandparents, so that he could spend £10 on a gift for Hayley.

The gift he choose was from the homeware section and cost £15, which was more than he had whilst out shopping, Surrey Live reports.

The mum-of-two, 28, said: "He was looking in the home section and said 'I really want to get you something, but it is £15'. I told him he would need to find something else that cost less."

Josh was gutted, but a stranger had overheard the conversation and out of nowhere passed £10 over to Hayley.

"She said, 'here is £10 so your son can get you that gift'. I just broke down in tears, then she was gone as quick as she came.

"Everyone was wearing masks as well, and I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't find her or remember what she looked like," Hayley, from Camberley, said.

She recalled being so shocked by the generosity that she "couldn't stop crying". "It was just the kindness of it, the lovely gesture of her to overhear that and then come over - it was such a thoughtful thing to do," Hayley said.

It was even more touching for Hayley because of the financial challenges of the past year.

Hayley said: "I would have loved to have given him [Josh] money to go towards it [the present], but I have been furloughed. It has been a very tight year with everything going on."

Hayley works at an after school club but she has been unable to work there because she has no childcare at the moment.

She explained how her mum would usually be able to look after her children, however, as she is in the high risk category for being vulnerable to Covid-19, she has been unable to look after the boys.

Hayley said: "It was a really tough year for all of us. The children were off school for six months and home-schooling was a bit of a stress but we got through it.

"Financially it has been really tough. We have had support though, my landlord was amazing and put my rent down for the time being. So it was great to have that bit of joy and kindness [at Sainsbury's]."

The new present Josh has bought Hayley, with help from the thoughtful shopper, is now wrapped underneath the tree and waiting to be opened.

Hayley and Josh are now eager to find her to say thank you. Josh has even drawn her a colourful picture of a bouquet of flowers.

Although Hayley can't remember what the shopper looked like, the special moment happened at around 1pm in the Camberley Sainsbury's on Monday (December 21).
