Sainsbury's shopper claims 'lizard egg' hatched from bananas bought in Glasgow store

A horrified Scots shopper has claimed a 'lizard egg' hatched from her bunch of bananas.

Shona Mckenzie, 20, bought the 88p bunch of bendy fruit while picking up her weekly supermarket shop at the Sainsbury's store on Glasgow's Crow Road.

But when the student, also from Glasgow, went to grab one of the yellow treats she noticed a small white egg wedged in the stalk.

Worried it may have been laid by a poisonous overseas spider, Shona took the Peruvian-grown bananas to her kitchen sink in a bid to wash it away.

As soon as she reached the basin, Shona says the egg fell off the stalk and cracked open before a small pink fetal creature emerged.

She phoned her biologist dad who told her what it was before disposing of it in the bin.

Shocked Shona, who made the discovery yesterday, said: "I don't know how I didn't notice it in the shop.

"I went straight to the self-checkout till so the cashier didn't point it out to me.

"At first I thought it was a killer spider and thought that was the last thing I needed.

"I didn't want it hatching in my bedroom so I took it out to put it under the sink and wash away.

"But when I got to the kitchen the egg fell off and it just hatched!

"It's definitely not a spider. I've never seen anything like it before. I think it might be a lizard as the bananas were from Peru.

"It wasn't moving. I showed my housemate and sent pictures to my dad but I ended up putting it in the bin.

"What else could I really do? It's not like there's a number I could ring.

"I'm definitely going to be more careful when I pick up my fruit and vegetables now!"

Sainsbury's has been contacted for comment.
