Sainsbury's seeks to open new shop on Nottingham's busiest street

Sainsbury's is hoping to open a new shop in the heart of Nottingham city centre.

The supermarket giant has applied for a licence to sell alcohol at the premises in Clumber Street, reputedly the busiest shopping street in Europe.

The property, previously an 02 phone shop, is currently empty.

There is already a Sainsbury's Local not far away in Wheeler Gate but the company hasn't had a major presence in the city centre since the 1990s when a superstore in Broadmarsh shopping centre, complete with a bakery section and clothes department, closed down and later become Wilko.

The company has applied to the licensing authority to sell alcohol between the hours of 8am and 11pm daily.

Before the pandemic Clumber Street, which is home to McDonald's, JD Sports and Footasylum, reportedly had an annual footfall of 19.8 million a year.
