Sainsbury's recreates origin of Father Christmas in 'beautiful' advert

We're not even halfway through November yet but there's already a solid contender for best Christmas advert of 2019.

The advert was launched late last night (November 11) and recreates the story of Father Christmas, who is introduced as a young orphan child named Nicholas.

It opens with the first Sainsbury's store in 1869 as founders John James and Mary Ann sell produce on a street in Dickens' London, Hull Live reports.

After Nicholas is wrongly accused of stealing a clementine from the store, he is taken under the wing of Mary Ann.

In the true spirit of Christmas, she gifts the young orphan a bag of clementines.

Nicholas responds by telling Mary Ann he cannot pay for them but she responds: "If you can't do something special for someone at Christmas, then when can you do it?"

Inspired by Mary Ann's kindness, Nicholas then climbs down the chimney of his orphanage during the night and places the clementines into his friends' stockings - while sporting a red cloak and hat.

The recreation of the origin of Father Christmas left some viewers in tears while one person declared it was "better than Netflix".

Lisa Ashworth posted: "That gave me the goose bumps!"

Another added: "Loved the advert it brought tears to my eyes."

A third added: "Its a beautiful advert and shows how Christmas should be."
