Sainsbury's petrol station at Emersons Green closed indefinitely after Vauxhall Corsa crash

A Sainsbury's petrol station remains shut after a Vauxhall Corsa ploughed into it.

A man in his 80s lost control of his car and smashed it into the petrol station shop in Emerson Way, Emersons Green, yesterday (May 27).

One of the shop's employees said it will be closed today. She added that staff do not know when it will reopen and building work needs to take place.

The site's broken windowfront is covered by chipboard today.

What happened in the crash?

Witnesses said the car was being driven by a male pensioner, and that afterwards an elderly couple were dazed but unhurt.

The car caused significant damage to the shop, with bricks strewn across the site.

A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said two fire engines attended from Kingswood.

He said: “One male casualty in his 80s had been rescued from the car prior to us arriving, and he was checked over and handed to the ambulance service in attendance.

“Firefighters checked over the integrity of the structure of the kiosk, and it appears to be OK."

A spokeswoman for South Western Ambulance Service said they sent several resources to the scene including the HART ambulance teams to secure the scene, because it was a petrol station.

"Two patients were treated at the scene by paramedic teams for minor injuries," she added.

A spokesman for Sainsbury's said the petrol station was still closed.

"The petrol filling station at our Emersons Green store is temporarily closed following a car accident. Thankfully no one was hurt.

"We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and are working to reopen as quickly as possible," he said.
