Sainsbury’s has launched a Christmas recruitment drive
(Picture: PA Wire)Sainsbury’s is seeking thousands of delivery drivers to work over Christmas, with some £500 bonuses on offer, the business has said.
FTSE 100 supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is looking for around 22,000 workers in total, in its biggest ever Christmas recruitment drive.
The grocer, which also owns Argos, said there will be some 14,500 in-store roles, 4500 openings in logistics (in house or for third parties Sainsbury’s uses), and 3000 delivery driver roles. The jobs are temporary for the festive period.
The search for drivers comes at a time when retailers are competing for employees, with a well documented shortage of HGV drivers in the UK.
The company said it is introducing a new incentive payment to recruit more Argos and groceries online delivery drivers. Both new and existing drivers could earn up to an additional £500 for doing shifts over the busy Christmas period.
A driver who works 36.5 hours per week throughout the eight-week eligibility period ( November 7-January 1), will receive a £500 one off payment in January 2022.
Payments will be pro-rated depending on worked hours.
Clo Moriarty, Sainsbury’s retail and digital director, said: “We’re going all out to help our customers celebrate and make sure they have a great Christmas this year.”
Moriarty added: “By recruiting 22,000 temporary Sainsbury’s and Argos colleagues on an attractive pay package, incentivising online drivers and offering additional hours to existing colleagues over the festive season, we will deliver what our customers want - great food and fantastic service.”
