Sainsbury's new recycling vending machines could pay you £25 per visit

Sainsburys are launching a plastic recycling scheme which can give shoppers a bonus of up to £25 every time they use it.

Customers will receive 5p coupons for every piece of unwanted plastic in the trial, which is being pilot in Sainsbury's Lincoln superstore.

Items which can be deposited are plastic bottles of up to three litres, and also metal cans, the Grimsby Live reports .

There is only slight drawback - you can only deposit containers from products available to buy in Sainsbury's.

So you can still recycle bottles from big brands you can buy in Sainsbury's stores like Coca-Cola, but not own-brand ones from different retailers.

Those using the scheme will get a 5p Sainsbury's voucher for each item, and can return up to 500 items per visit – meaning could get up to £25 off your shopping.

For now, the trial is only running in the Lincoln store, however the grocer said it plans to extend it to four more stores including some smaller shops in the next few weeks and added it could be rolled out nationwide later.

Why you should never crush your cans before recycling them

The scheme is similar to the "reverse vending machine" that was demonstrated at an event in Brigg last year, when people were able to feed their empty cans and bottles into the device and were given a voucher worth 10p for each one deposited.
