Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Tesco shoppers share fury over Marmite shortage

Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons and Waitrose shoppers have shared their Marmite struggles as stocks run low on supermarket shelves.

A combination of the love it or hate it product proving popular in lockdown and producers Unilever suspending production, other than its small 250g jars, has meant fans of the condiment have not been able to get their hands on it.

According to The Mirror, Marmite has been hit by the closure of breweries during lockdown, robbing manufacturers of its primary ingredient, yeast.

Sainsbury's are currently completely out of stock online while Tesco, Morrisons and Waitrose only have limited supplies of the small 250g jars rather than larger pots.

At the time of writing, only Asda appears to have the 500g jars of Marmite available on their website.

And it looks like shoppers are also struggling to buy the spread in stores too, with one writing: "No Marmite in Waitrose either... what's going on? #Marmiteshortage."

Another added: "Where is all the Marmite? #Marmiteshortage."

While a third said: "Just experienced the Marmite shortage first hand in #Morrisons."

Others have been turning to alternative options such as supermarket own brands instead and sharing their "despair" on social media.

It comes nearly a year after Unilever, which owns Marmite, temporarily halted all production of the spread except for its small 250g jars.

However, there's hope ahead as the company believes shelves will be fully restocked later this year as pubs get the go ahead to reopen.

A Unilever spokesman told the publication: "We've continued to see high demand for Marmite with more people making meals at home during lockdown as well as reduced supply of yeast from the breweries that supply us.

"As pubs and hospitality begin to open up once more, we expect the full range of jars to be back on supermarket shelves over the coming months."
