Sainsbury's local shuts suddenly in Sketty during fire-break lockdown

A popular local supermarket has closed suddenly in Swansea.

Sainsbury's Local on Gower Road, Sketty, shut its doors for the last time in the fire-break lockdown on October 31.

According to the company, the closure was due to a "range of factors".

Staff employed at the shop when it closed were able to apply for new roles at other stores, a Sainsbury's spokeswoman said.

“Our Swansea Gower Road Local has now closed and customers can continue to shop with us at nearby stores," she said.

“Colleagues were able to transfer with the store to the Co-op or apply for alternative roles at other local Sainsbury’s stores. We understand this will be an unsettling time for those affected and we’re supporting them in any way we can.”

The announcement comes amid a difficult year for the company.

In April, Sainsbury's revealed it expected coronavirus to hit its profits by £500 million.

At the beginning of 2020, the retailer said it would be cutting hundreds of management jobs - amid claims its continued integration of Argos was to blame.

And last week, it was reported that Sainsbury's was considering selling its banking arm, which was launched in 1997.

Sky News said Sainsbury's had begun sounding out potential buyers of its banking unit, which has more than 2 million customers across a range of products including mortgages, home insurance and credit cards.
