Sainsbury's launches new £5 trial to deliver cooked pizzas straight to your door

Sainsbury’s has announced plans to dip into the food delivery market with freshly cooked pizzas delivered straight to your door.

The grocer has joined forces with Deliveroo to bring hot food from the supermarket counter to customers’ homes in a project that will see opening hours extended and potentially more jobs created.

The trial will launch in five stores – Cambridge, Selly Oak, West Hove, Pimlico and Hornsey - over the next two months.

Once launched, Deliveroo customers nearby will find Sainsbury’s listed alongside local restaurants delivering in their area. All items will cost the same as in-store prices - with sourdough pizzas coming in at around £5 each.

It said the initiative will form part of a wider trial to "improve customer experience and make sure they can shop quickly and conveniently whenever, wherever and however they want".

Customers will be able to choose from nearly 50 Sainsbury’s products on the app. In addition to sourdough pizzas, they'll also be able to order snacks, sides, salads and dips as well as soft drinks.

To meet demand, Sainsbury's said more staff will be brought into the five stores to fulfil customer demand - while branches will also operate extended hours - with pizza counters open until 10pm.

"With more and more shoppers looking for convenient and affordable meals delivered to their doors, our trial with Deliveroo brings our great value hot food direct to customers’ homes," Clodagh Moriarty, at Sainsbury’s said.

"We’ll be listening to customer feedback throughout the trial to understand how we can best serve their hot food delivery needs."

The UK’s food delivery market is currently worth £8.1 billion, up 13.4% since 2017 and is expected to grow to £9.8 billion by 2021.

The trial, the UK's first for supermarkets, follows on from McDonald's, Subway and Greggs which have all launched delivery options in the past year through both Deliveroo and rival Uber Eats.
