Sainsbury's issues important message to shoppers on new face mask rules

From tomorrow (July 24), most people will be required to wear a face mask or covering when in shops or supermarkets in England.

The only exception to this rule will be for children under 11 or and those with certain disabilities.

There have also been questions on how this will be policed, as thought who don't comply may be subject to a £100 fine - reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.

While shops and supermarkets have the right to refuse entry, Sainsbury's has spoken out on the issue.

The major chain has said it will not "challenge" shoppers who enter its stores without a face covering, despite it becoming a legal requirement.

Sainsbury's said to its Twitter followers: "We won't be challenging customers without a mask when they enter or when they are in store since they may have a reason not to wear a mask."

Fellow chain Aldi has also issued guidance on how the face mask policy will work in its stores in addition to its other safety measures.
