Sainsbury's is offering 150,000 extra delivery slots to the elderly and vulnerable during the coronavirus pandemic

If you have tried to get your hands on a supermarket delivery slot recently, you will notice that they are extremely hard to come by.

There is a huge strain on supermarkets and there is a lot of pressure on them to provide more home delivery services.

For some vulnerable people these delivery slots are the only way for them to get supplies.

According to Birmingham Live, Sainsbury's is making more changes to its online delivery service as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

This week, Sainsbury's has changed the rules around its delivery slots.

Last week, the supermarket offered 450,000 elderly and vulnerable people priority online delivery booking- this week, they have are offering the same group and additional 150,000 priority delivery slots.

Vulnerable and elderly customer who require delivery slots will be identified via a government database, where people registered to say they are vulnerable and need assistance in getting a food shop.

In a tweet published today (8 April), Sainsbury's attached a letter from CEO Mike Coupe which said:

"We've taken further steps to make sure more customers have access to the food they need.

"We have since received the government database of all the people in England who have registered with the government to say they need help getting a food shop and have identified a further 150,000 customers who we are contacting to offer a priority delivery slot."

Sainsbury's are still waiting for databases for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The supermarket also announced that it will lift buying restrictions on thousands of products as stock levels are improving- although some restrictions will still apply to popular products.

Sainsbury's is also donating £3m to Fareshare (food poverty charity) and partnering with Comic Relief to raise money for people impacted by Covid-19.
