Sainsbury’s introduces new tool in battle against self-checkout thefts

  • Sainsbury's is installing cameras above self-checkout tills that will show shoppers a replay if items are not scanned correctly, aiming to reduce Shoplifting.
  • A pop-up message will appear if an item isn't scanned properly before being placed in the bagging area. A customer reported receiving a replay after a pack of basil was deemed "too light."
  • Sainsbury's stated that the decision to implement these measures is based on a range of factors, including customer experience and security.
  • Shoplifting offences recorded by police in England and Wales have surpassed half a million in the past year, a record high since 2003, with 516,971 offences recorded in 2024.
  • The British Retail Consortium (BRC) warns that retail crime is spiraling out of control, costing retailers over £2.2 billion a year, with many incidents going unreported due to a lack of faith in police action.
