Sainsbury's has changed its rules for shoppers and is limiting food to stop coronavirus stockpiling

Sainsbury's has introduced new measures in a bid to stop stockpiling, it has been confirmed.

The supermarket has put new measures in place after customers completely ransacked stores.

The  retailer has seen shelves cleared over the past week, with products like chicken, pasta, fresh fruit and vegetables and toilet roll going completely out of stock.

In a bid to manage stock levels, as of today, Sainsbury's has announced that shoppers will be limited to buying a maximum of three of each individual item.

More popular items like toilet paper, soap and long-life milk, meanwhile, have been reduced to two per customer.

"We have enough food coming into the system, but are limiting sales so that it stays on shelves for longer and can be bought by a larger numbers of customers," said chief executive Mike Coupe.

He added that as of Thursday, Sainsbury's stores will close all cafes, meat, fish and pizza counters to free up freight capacity for essential products.

And, in a move that is likely to be welcomed by most, the supermarket has announced that customers aged over 70 and those disabilities will have priority access to online delivery slots from Monday.

The chain is also expanding its click and collect service.

The most vulnerable will be given priority access to stores for the first hour of trading on Thursday 19 March, but stores will be open an hour longer to make up for the loss of shopping time.
