Sainsbury's confirms closure of certain UK stores during coronavirus pandemic

Sainsbury's has confirmed it will close 12 of its stores as part of its plans to tackle the coronavirus crisis and the demand it has put on supermarkets.

The retailer is temporarily closing a small number of convenience stores, with location spread across the UK.

In statement released by Sainsbury's it said the reason behind these particular stores closing was because they were "empty" given many customers now working from home, reports BirminghamLive.

The locations of the stores are not yet confirmed - but are believed to be convenience shops, such as at railway stations.

A Sainsbury's spokeswoman said: "These are stores that have seen significantly fewer customers in recent days as people are working from home

.

"All colleagues will move to neighbouring stores until these stores re-open."

Sainsbury's operates over 600 supermarkets and about 800 convenience stores. Many of which are located across Liverpool including inside Liverpool Central station.

It follows a roll out of new measures by Sainsbury's to help NHS staff and the elderly as the supermarket extended its golden hour to include both types of customers.

Following Monday night's announcement, shoppers are only allowed to do one "essential" shop per day and only one member of each household per day is permitted to do this shop.
