Sainsbury's becomes first major supermarket to stop selling CDs and DVDs in stores

Sainsbury’s is to become the first big supermarket to stop selling CDs and DVDs in its stores.

Bosses at the Big Four grocer said the decision has been made following the rise of streaming services, which has been accelerated due to lockdown.

Sales of the silver discs are being phased out in stores, although Sainsbury's will continue to sell vinyl records in some stores.

Its rival supermarkets, including Tesco, Asda and Morrisons, continue to sell both CDs and DVDs and haven't made any announcements about pulling them from sale.

The decline in CD and DVD sales has largely been blamed on the rise in popularly of streaming sites like Netflix, Disney+ and Spotify.

Britons signed up for 12 million more TV streaming subscription packages this year, according to figures from Omdia, with more people stuck at home due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Netflix and Amazon Prime Video saw some 36 million people sign up to their services in the UK, a jump from the 24 million recorded at the end of 2019.

Declining CD and DVD sales had been blamed on the HMV store closures long before the coronavirus crisis.

HMV has collapsed into administration on two separate occasions, with the music and film retailer eventually being purchased in a rescue deal by music mogul Doug Putman in February 2019.

A spokesperson from Sainsbury's said: "Our customers increasingly go online for entertainment.

"Earlier this year we took the decision to gradually phase out the sale of DVDs and CDs, so that we can dedicate extra space to food and popular products like clothing and homewares."

In other Sainsbury's news, the supermarket this week announced a raft of new price cuts as it bids to compete with discount rival Aldi.

Sainsbury's said it is cutting the price of 60 popular items, including fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, dairy and store cupboard items.
