Sainsbury's announces thousands of job cuts and closure of all meat, fish and deli counters

Sainsbury's have announced plans to cut 3,500 jobs as the country enters a second national lockdown.

The supermarket giant said jobs will go as part of the closure of all its meat, fish and deli counters.

Bosses have also confirmed plans to imminently close 120 Argos stores.

This forms part of a wider strategy to shut 420 standalone Argos branches over the next three-and-a-half years.

Simon Roberts, chief executive of Sainsbury’s, said: "We are talking to colleagues today about where the changes we are announcing in Argos standalone stores and food counters impact their roles.

"We will work really hard to find alternative roles for as many of these colleagues as possible and expect to be able to offer alternative roles for the majority of impacted colleagues.

"Right here and now, I and all the team are focused on supporting and delivering for our customers in the days and weeks ahead."

The announcement comes a day after retail giant John Lewis confirmed a further 1,500 job cuts to head office roles.

Bosses at the 156-year-old department store announced the move as part of a five-year bid to return to 'sustainable profits' by the year 2025.

They said the decision will save the retailer £50million, alongside another £3million saving project which will see eight stores permanently closed.
