Sainsbury's and Asda slash fuel costs again - with double the discount on diesel

Sainsbury's and Asda have announced they are cutting their fuel prices for the second time in just over a week - with double the discount on diesel.

From today, Asda will reduce the price of its unleaded petrol by up to 2 pence per litre and its diesel by up to 4 pence per litre.

Sainsbury's will follow suit on Friday, February 7, with the same discounts across all of its 315 forecourts.

Sainsbury's customers will also be able to collect Nectar points every time they fill up - with one point on every litre purchased.

It's the second time the supermarkets have dropped fuel prices in just over a week.

But according to data from the RAC, the reduction is long overdue.

Despite the wholesale cost of petrol and diesel falling in January, average fuel prices at the UK’s four biggest supermarkets actually increased every day until a cut was finally announced at the end of the month, they said.

Tips for saving petrol

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams, added: "Based on steadily falling wholesale prices January should have been a good month for drivers at the pumps, but instead they ended up being paying well over the odds at the pumps.

"In fact, January was a perfect example of ‘rocket and feather’ pricing where prices go up far faster than they come down."
