Sainbury's bans sale of fireworks in Scottish stores amid concerns for pets and elderly

Sainsbury's has banned its stores across Scotland from selling fireworks in the lead up to .

The supermarket giant has now confirmed it will no longer be selling fireworks this year.

One took to social media to urge stores to stop selling fireworks to the general public, which prompted a response from the retailer.

"#Diwali2019 doesn’t have 2b celebrate with fireworks, it’s a festival of light!"

Sainsbury's confirmed they won't be selling this year.

The official Sainsbury's Twitter account wrote: "Hey Sally, thanks! We won't be selling fireworks in any of our stores this year. Hope this helps!"

The Dog Trust welcomed the decision by the supermarket.

A spokesperson for the Dogs Trust said: "Although they can look beautiful, fireworks can be very distressing for dogs when let off unexpectedly, and because they are so easily accessible all year-round, dog owners are on tenterhooks as to when their beloved pooch will next be frightened.

"We congratulate Sainsbury’s on their decision not to sell fireworks this year and would encourage others to do the same."

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: "Fireworks are no longer available in our stores but customers can continue to choose from a range of seasonal products, such as glow sticks and light up spinning wands."
