A 67-year-old sailor lost at sea for 12 days has been recovered by the US coast guard 64 miles off the coast of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Ron Ingraham went missing on Thanksgiving after radioing two mayday calls for help, saying his 25-foot boat Malia was in danger of sinking.

A search for Ingraham was suspended 1 December, until the navy ship USS Paul Hamilton received another mayday call from Ingraham on Tuesday. The guided-missile destroyer was nearby and rescued Ingraham, who was dehydrated and hungry but otherwise uninjured, according to the Associated Press.

Ingraham is now aboard the 110-foot US coast guard cutter Kiska en route to Molokai, a Hawaiian island. His boat, Malia, is in tow.
