Saharan dust is streaking Edinburgh windows and covering cars in the capital

If your car is dirty (or dirtier than normal) at the moment, it could be down to stray plumes of dust from the Sahara desert.

If you thought Porty beach was positively tropical this weekend, then you might be interested to know that current weather trends are bringing sand from even further afield to Edinburgh.

If you find your parked car covered in a thin layer of ash coloured dirt, that's because it's the residue from a freak sand storm from the Sahara.

Scottish SPCA warn Edinburgh pet owners 'dogs die in hot cars' after hundreds of reports last summer

Dust from the African desert has been drifting more than 2,000 miles northwards after high pressure over Scandinavia - which brought warm weather to Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland over the weekend.

The dust has been dumped on cars and blown against tenement windows in the capital, leaving a thin residue behind.

Glasgow has been worse-affected, with thicker layers of dirt hitting cars, but Edinburgh isn't far behind.

The plume is clearing northwards, and will get more concentrated over Scotland before it dissipates entirely, so you might want to wait for a while before busting out that power-washer.

The Met Office shared a gif of the dust plume heading north to Edinburgh yesterday. They said:

"Here's the latest Met Office #saharadust model dust forecast - the darker colours represent thicker plumes spreading from the south. Good news - it's clearing the UK northwards over the next 36 hours."
