Well, that’s it. Spotlight takes home the big award, making it another strong contender for the Best Picture Oscar, though the Producers Guild winner, The Big Short, remains the favorite. Since the Oscars went to 10 Best Picture nominees, the winner has always won the Producers Guild Award as well.

Spotlight wins Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

Mark Ruffalo describes the story of the Catholic sex abuse scandal as “one of the most horrific things our culture has allowed to happen.” Michael Keaton references the disenfranchised, including those in Flint, Michigan.

Still no wins for the bear.

I really hope Johnny Depp wins for playing Jack Nicholson in The Departed.

The cast of Downton Abbey wins Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series

I assume they won because their costumes are older than the ones the Mad Men cast wore. As you would expect, the British cast of Downton Abbey was quite humble.

Susan Sarandon says the years go by, but she looks about 30.

Kevin Spacey wins Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series

He thanks his “creator. No, not that one. The one grounded on Earth.” Don’t worry, he also thanked his manager.

Viola Davis wins Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series

“Why do I have to be a hero? Why do you have to like me? Why do I have to be a mentor?” A fair set of questions. Often, black actors have to represent the best of their culture on screen, but it’s equally as important to show all sides of blackness in pop culture.

I honestly don’t know anyone who watches Dowton Abbey, but I am sure there are plenty of Americans who can’t get enough of an English accent.

Carol Burnett accepts the Lifetime Achievement Award

Steve Carell helps Burnett onto the stage. “Tina and Amy, you just touched my heart. You guys are the whole ball of wax,” she says. “Back in the covered wagon days, they had double features.” She mentions that “The network tried to talk me into a half-hour sitcom called ‘Here’s Agnes’” and that they said that “comedy/variety is a man’s game.”

Up next, a montage of Carol Burnett clips, interspersed with interviews with Ellen DeGeneres and Jane Lynch.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Carol Burnett, one of the great comic minds of her time. They remind us how difficult comedic acting is. “Carol is better than all of us. We’re gonna give her a prize for it.” -- Amy Poehler

Bryan Cranston, Diane Lane, and Helen Mirren present the clip for Trumbo. Despite this being one of the least seen awards contenders this year, Cranston’s work elevates it.

Idris Elba wins a second award, taking home the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries

Elba wins for “a little train that was Luther.” “I really don’t know what to say tonight.”

Ben Kingsley nominated for playing an Egyptian and Bill Murray nominated for playing “Bill Murray.”

Queen Latifah wins for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries

This is her second win for this category. She does a few curls with her trophy, which was, again, as hilarious as it sounds. She thanks her “brothers in the struggle.” She also thanks her “acting consultant,” which is an exciting new career for all of you kids to consider as you graduate from college!

Ana Ferris and Anthony Mackie present the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries. But first, they recognize American servicemen. Nicole Kidman was nominated for Grace of Monaco, which I think we all agree was terrible.

President Howard introduces a video montage of scenes from film and TV exalting the virtues of the acting profession. They cut to a scene from Zach Braff’s last movie and I almost spit up my pizza. At least there’s plenty of diversity in this montage. I think I saw Mario Van Peebles.

SAG’s president Ken Howard thanks all the other unions in Hollywood. The SAG Awards are easily the best awards show put on by a union since the Pipe Fitters’ Local 123 gave Timmy Barton the “Best Burp” trophy at the Memorial Day Cookout.

Idris Elba wins for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role

Idris trips up the stairs and reveals that he got his SAG card for a performance in Law & Order. Thanks “Ted Something from Netflix.” Can we just let him play James Bond? At least once? “We made a film about real people and real lives.”

Michael Shannon’s performance in 99 Homes is over-the-top and steals a modest film from Andrew Garfield. I interviewed him last year for Grantland.

The cast of Straight Out of Compton presents their clip for Oustanding Cast in a Drama, “exposing life in the hood and starting a social revolution that still reverberates today.” It would be quite a statement for SAG to give this film their highest honor, after the snub from the Academy.

Alicia Vikander wins for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role

Well deserved victory. She has quite a hard time keeping it together during her acceptance speech. This is her first go at the awards circuit. She mentions her mom is an actress and “loved to watch her rehearse, loved to watch her perform.” She describes a “sudden thrill” of collaboration. “That magic only happens between acting companions.” She concludes by thanking the trans community and her family.

Alicia Vikander had a truly amazing year, between Danish Girl and Ex Machina. Hard to say which performance was better.

Uzo Aduba wins Outstanding Female Actor in a Comedy Series

The SAG Awards are already blacker than the Oscars with the victory for Aduba’s performance as Crazy Eyes on Orange Is the New Black.

The show began tonight with actors in the crowd, including Rami Malek, explaining what made them become actors.

Jon Hamm is the most charming person in the world and it makes me so mad. When will it be my time, Lord?

The awards have started and I (Alex Needham) am handing over to our Dave Schilling. Take it away, Dave!

Awards shows are half about trophies and half about dresses, I suppose.

Leonardo DiCaprio in the house, with slicked-back hair. He looks like he could do with a bit of lipsalve. He describes The Revenant as an “epic art house film” and he says he wants to make more movies like it.

Leonardo DiCaprio met with the Pope last week. Where is the Sean Penn/El Chapo photo for THAT?

Finally an awards ceremony the Guardian can get behind

“In LA, you never put real clothes on” -- Rooney Mara. Um, ok. Sure. Whatever you say, ma’am. I wear sweatpants to funerals.

I’ll soon be handing over to our Dave Schilling who is in LA, although watching this on the telly, much like myself.

Kate Winslet is on the red carpet and just spotted herself on screen. “I’m pleased with how I look - well done me,” she announces. Which is nice. In other news, her favourite emojis are “the poo one and the chicken one.” This morning, Michael Fassbender sent her the shrimp one.

Kate and Rooney Mara are on the red carpet, looking elegant in plunging Valentino dresses. “Do these dresses describe who you are?” asks our host. “No,” say the Maras unsurprisingly.

A prediction from impartial12 in the comments:

DiCaprio will win, and no amount of cries claiming racism is going to diminish that achievement.

Saoirse Ronan looks glam in a translucent pink sheath by Michael Kors, if that doesn’t make her sound too much like a condom. She’s up for Brooklyn. She’s in living in New York at the moment as she’s about to be in The Crucible, directed by Ivo van Hove, whose last project was Lazarus, the musical co-written by David Bowie.

Not sure these tears were entirely sincere

This is interesting. Can it win tonight?

It’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson, nominated for Modern Family. They’re talking about Barbra Streisand, who did a voiceover on Modern Family. “Very exciting,” he avers. He’s wearing Armani and Chopard diamond cufflinks, for those who are into that.

And here’s Idris Elba, who’s up for three gongs. “I’m feeling very sexy about it – it’s good because it’s my peers,” he says. He gives a sweet shout-out to his drama teacher, and says that getting his SAG card was the biggest moment of his life. SAG, of course, is the performers’ trade union.

Rami Malek is up for a gong for Mr Robot, which won two gongs at the Golden Globes a few weeks ago. His date is his publicist – there is a man who knows which side his bread is buttered.

Brie Larson, nominated (and hotly tipped) for Room, is trussed up in a slightly odd Versace dress, “the first one I put on” after flying in from Australia.

It’s Alicia Vikander, nominated for The Danish Girl. She’s also in sequins – Louis Vuitton ones at that.

Sarah Silverman has hoved into view. She’s in Vivienne Westwood, fashion fans, and is feeling herself “constantly”. She’s up for an acting prize for I Smile Back, which she says was shot for $400,000.

Bryan Cranston is on the red carpet - he’s one of the best actor nominees, for Trumbo. He’s wearing a Burberry tux, the company that’s just ruffled feathers for getting Brooklyn Beckham to shoot their new perfume campaign. If you want to see a list of nominees, by the way, they’re here. We’ll be adding the winners as the night wears on.

Ellie Kemper, surely a good bet for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, is sashaying down the red carpet. She’s wearing a Peter Pilotto gown that the describes as “pretty cool ... I am very cool,” she sarcastically, but still rather adorably adds.

It’s the Screen Actors Guild awards, the latest staging post on the way to the Oscars. However, with this year seeing the Academy mired in controversy for failing to nominate any actors of colour, the SAGs have a golden opportunity to make the Oscars look very stuffy indeed. Beasts of No Nation and NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton are both nominated, and there are two nods for Idris Elba, for Beasts and Luther (since TV acting awards are also given out tonight). As my colleague Andrew Pulver continued in his story about tonight’s show:

In the female actor categories, Queen Latifah is up for Bessie, a biopic of the blues singer Bessie Smith, Viola Davis for legal drama series How to Get Away With Murder and Uzo Aduba for her role as Crazy Eyes Warren in the prison show Orange Is the New Black.

At the moment the stars are arriving on the red carpet before the ceremony kicks off at 7pm. As is the case with these things, we’re watching it on E! where they’re asking the eternal question, “Who are you wearing?”

Eddie Redmayne is on the red carpet, fresh from shooting Fantastic Beasts. He’s looking sharp in a Dior tuxedo and being very charming and English talking about his forthcoming baby.
