Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service crews were called at 11.37am to Saffron Court in Crocus Street off London Road on Wednesday, April 28.

Crews from London Road, West Bridgford, Carlton and Highfields stations were at the scene near to Nottingham Railway Station.

Smoke could be seen rising above the city's skyline.

Simon Lilley was the incident commander and station manager at London Road.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: "When we arrived we saw a large volume of smoke appearing at the top of the building itself from the roof area.

"We quickly determined it was involving solar panels.

"Crews quickly gained access onto the roof and determined the cause of the fire itself and we then proceeded to evacuate the building.

"The fire is now extinguished. We did not use the aerial ladder platform, we put that up purely as a precaution.

"We extinguished it using internal mains and a crew in breathing apparatus on the roof."

He said crews would remain at the scene during the day for clean up and investigation before they can then get people back into their properties.

Inspector Paul Hennessy, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Officers have been supporting fire service colleagues following a report of a fire in Crocus St.

"The fire has now been put out and no injuries have been reported. Police have been on scene helping to manage traffic as Crocus Street and it's links with London Road, Summer Leys Lane and Queens Road were blocked.

"We would ask the public to avoid the area in the immediate as fire crews continue to be in attendance and we prepare for roads to reopen shortly."

Saffron Court resident Manul Amarakoon, 24, said: "I heard a lot of commotion and footsteps and Jade opened the door and saw 15 firemen.

"They asked us to go back then asked us to use the flat for access to the roof from the balcony.

"They asked us to take passports and things and leave."

Jade Chanel, 26, added: "I was a bit stressed.

"I didn’t know what was happening and couldn’t smell anything. I feel everything is under control. The top floor was evacuated."
