Safety warning issued after giant inflatable pink flamingo spotted on the River Trent

Four men took 'messing about on the river' to a whole new level - by floating down the Trent in Nottingham in a giant pink flamingo inflatable.

Canoes, rowing boats, river cruisers and even dragon boats are familiar sights on the river but this was quite a spectacle.

The men, in shorts and sunglasses, made the most of the hot weather as they larked around.

Friends on the bank couldn't hold back the laughter as the flamingo sailed down the water from Beeston to Silverdale.

Plumber Craig Woodward said it certainly brightened his day.

He said: "It's brilliant, just a bit of fun. It's a huge inflatable. They didn't need paddles or oars. We're 40 years old with about 10 kids between us but this is too good to miss."

However, Stephen Hardy, spokesman for the Canal and River Trust in the East Midlands, had this safety warning.

He said: "This might look lots of fun but, while we don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, it’s really not the most sensible thing to do and we’d advise people to please stay out of the water or use inflatables on the river.

“The Trent is a big powerful river, with strong undercurrents and anyone slipping into the water could find themselves getting into difficulties very quickly.

"While the air temperature may be pushing 30 degrees the water temperature will be much colder and can cause muscle cramps meaning that even the strongest swimmers can struggle. Sadly 400 people drown in the UK each year so the risks are very real.

“Our waterways are amazing places on a summer’s day but we’d urge people to please stay out of the water and find a different way to cool off.”
