Safety warning as dead 30ft whale washes up on Northumberland beach

A decomposing whale's carcass has washed up on Blyth Beach.

Police have put a cordon up around the 30ft juvenile's body, with officials warning the public to stay away.

The dead whale is thought to have been discovered on Friday morning.

While work continues to remove the creature, dog walkers have been told to keep their pets on leads while the public has been warned of an "unpleasant smell" coming from the site.

"The County Council is organising the removal and disposal and in the interim are working with the Coast Guard and Police to keep people away from this partially decomposed carcass," said a Northumberland County Council spokesperson.

"Police have erected a cordon around it and we are putting signs warning people to stay away.

"Further signs will be put up on the prom to advise people in the area to keep their dogs on leads and ensure they stay away from the whale.

"Because of the partial decomposition there is an unpleasant smell and we urge people not to visit the area until it has been removed."

Last year, a minke whale washed up on a beach in South Tyneside, sparking a similar warning.

And in 2019, a young humpback whale was found at the coast between Craster and Dunstanburgh Castle.
