Motorists are being urged to plan ahead, avoid peak travel where possible and allow extra time for their journeys next month as Coppins Crossing Road closes for the next stage of construction on the Molonglo River Bridge.
The busy route will close in both directions between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue from 2am Wednesday, August 12, until 6pm Friday, August 14.
If additional time is needed, the closure may remain in place until 6pm Saturday, August 15.
The closure is required so construction crews can safely install rails and throw-screen barriers along the northern side of the bridge, directly above Coppins Crossing Road.
Similar safety measures were completed on the southern side of the bridge in June.
The shutdown is expected to affect motorists travelling between Belconnen, the Molonglo Valley and Canberra's western suburbs.
Southbound motorists from Belconnen will be diverted via William Hovell Drive, Parkes Way and the Tuggeranong Parkway.
Northbound motorists travelling from the Molonglo Valley will need to take John Gorton Drive, follow Cotter Road and then access the Tuggeranong Parkway before reconnecting with William Hovell Drive via the Glenloch Interchange.
Construction on the Molonglo River Bridge project started in 2024 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The new bridge, roads and intersections will provide access to the future Molonglo Town Centre from Whitlam and future northern Molonglo Valley suburbs, and improve the area's connection to the wider Canberra road network.
