Safety Tyrann Mathieu to leave Texans, join Chiefs

Add safety as one of the needs the Houston Texans have to address in the offseason.

According to multiple reports, safety Tyrann Mathieu intends to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs once the free agent market opens on March 13 at 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

The deal is worth three years and $42 million, giving the former 2013 Arizona Cardinals third-round pick the security that he has been seeking since the Cardinals let him go in the 2018 offseason.

Mathieu signed a one-year, $7 million deal to play for the Texans in 2018. The Honey Badger collected 89 combined tackles, 3.0 sacks, two interceptions, eight pass breakups, and a fumble recovery in his 16 starts for Houston.

The former LSU Tiger said it was “extremely important” for him to remain with the Texans at the conclusion of the 2018 season. However, it appears Kansas City offers Mathieu a comfortable financial situation and a young quarterback in Patrick Mahomes that will keep the Chiefs as competitive in the AFC as the Texans with quarterback Deshaun Watson.

One other big option at safety the Texans could target is Earl Thomas, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks, who is a former Texas Longhorn and Texas native.
