Safety teams step up work at site of Ayr High Street fire

Safety teams have stepped up work on Ayr High Street today after the blaze which ripped through flats in the town early on Sunday morning.

The inferno caused huge damage when breaking out in the roofspace of flats above the popular World of Art shop.

Six fire appliances raced to the well developed blaze at 2.15am, which saw the roof of the property gutted.

Critical damage has also been caused to the shop below.

Now police and fire chiefs have begun the painstaking task of picking through the delicate wreckage.

The High Street, which had been reopened to traffic, was once again closed off today as a giant crane was brought in to help teams scale the building.

And a skip was hoisted up to start with the precarious task of clearing debris from the site.
