Safety message issued over drinking alcohol near waterways

Police in South Ayrshire are warning people about the potentially deadly risk of mixing alcohol with swimming in rivers and reservoirs.

Officers have noted an increase in the number of incidents involving young people congregating near river banks as the summer unfolds.

The Post can reveal how police have become increasingly concerned following reports of youths congregating along the River Doon’s edge.

There have even been some reports of youngsters drinking alcohol- and some even swimming in the water.

It’s understood that local residents’ complaints have been around “anti-social behaviour” including “noise and littering.”

They are also concerned over the safety of the young people involved.

However, in the cases brought to the attention of local cops, young people have been “engaging positively” with officers.

As a result police have issued a reminder over the potential dangers of hanging out near such places- and using these venues to consume alcohol.

Chief Inspector Brian Anderson, Local Area Commander for South Ayrshire, told The Post: “We have recognised an increase in incidents involving young people congregating and socialising with friends along various parts of the River Doon in Ayr between Doonfoot and Alloway.

"Thankfully, no-one has been hurt or injured, we have started to see incidents being reported which involves the consumption of alcohol and open water swimming along the river.

“The dangers of this are obvious. Open water, whether it is a river or reservoir, can have many hidden dangers which you might not think about.

“The water will be very cold, causing an unexpected impact on the body when entering, there could be strong undercurrents, the water could be deeper than anticipated or there could be something under the water which catches on your clothing to name but a few issues.

“When you add in the effects of consuming alcohol to this it only makes matter worse.

“The last thing I want is for someone to be injured, or worse, as a result of this.

“Throughout the summer we will be working with our partners in South Ayrshire Council, Scottish Fire and Rescue as well as the Coastguard to do everything we can to keep our residents and young people safe.

“I ask that all of our young people do not swim in our open bodies of water across Ayrshire and that parents and guardians encourage their children to follow this advice.

"If you do see someone in difficulty in the water, keep watching them so that you know where they are, reassure them and if there is a buoyancy aid then throw them this. Do not enter the water and call 999 immediately."
