Safety fears as Ayr High Street closed as masonry falls from building

Ayr High Street has been shut off to vehicles after a parts of masonry has been falling from a building.

Safety concerns have been raised after the empty former Savers store has break away.

Rubble from the building can be seen on the ground below.

One shopper said: “It unusual to see Ayr High Street with no vehicles on it.

“It would appear that some bits of masonry falling from part of the building, ranging from the size of inch to about three inches.

“If it was to hit someone on the head it would cause a nasty injury.”

Buses are being diverted along Miller Road and Fort Street.

The drama has unfolded as up to 5000 people are set to descend on the town centre for alternative march.

Organisers insist that the march will go ahead.

A police spokesman said: “Due to an unsafe building the High Street in Ayr is closed to all vehicular traffic until further notice.

Please follow diversions. Pedestrian access IS available but is restricted between Old Bridge Street and the Sandgate/New Bridge Street.

“Pedestrians and traffic using New Bridge Street and Sandgate are unaffected.
