Safety Eric Reid re-signs with Panthers on 3-year deal

Eric Reid has signed a three-year contract to stay with the Carolina Panthers, the team announced Monday.

Reid originally signed with the Panthers in September after safety Da’Norris Searcy suffered his second concussion of the year and had to go on injured reserve.

Reid made an impact on the team’s struggling defense right away, with his first start coming in Week 4. He finished the season with 71 tackles, five pass breakups and one interception (should have been two) in 13 games.

Michael Silver at NFL.com reports that Reid’s contract is worth over $22 million. He could make up to $24 million with incentives.

At just 27 years old, Reid should have at least several seasons of good football ahead of him. He was a Pro Bowler as a rookie and provided a legitimate upgrade for Carolina at one of their weakest positions.

Even with Reid locked up, the Panthers should consider using a pick in April’s draft on a safety.
