Safety engineer, 3 others held in Pune construction site crash

PUNE: Police on Friday arrested the safety engineer and three others in connection with Thursday night’s accident at the under-construction Blue Grass Business Park site near Wadia bungalow at Shastrinagar, Yerawada, which left five workers dead and five injured.

A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other charges have been registered against the developers, contractors and others linked to the construction. “We have arrested the four men who were present at the site and were prima facie responsible,” senior inspector Yunus Shaikh of the Yerawada police told TOI.

“Those arrested are safety engineer Imtiaz Abul Barkat Ansari (38), site supervisor Mohammed Sharif Habibul Rehman Alam (35), site engineer Vijay Eknath Dhaktonde (25) and site manager Majid Alisa Khan (45),” Shaikh said.

The accident occurred when a huge galvanised steel wire mesh for reinforced concrete slab, which was to cover the basement of the structure, caved in and trapped several workers. “The workers were busy tying the steel mesh. Prima facie, we believe the support given to the steel mesh was not proper,” said Rohidas Pawar, deputy commissioner of police (Zone IV).
