Safety cordon after 'chemical incident' sparked huge emergency response

Emergency crews closed a Bristol road after a suspected chemical incident.

A safety cordon was put in place while environmental services, police, ambulance crews and firefighters attended the scene on Garnet Street in Bedminster.

Crews from Temple, Kingswood and Patchway were deployed to reports of a chemical spillage at 10.09 this morning (February 7).

A spokesperson from Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "On arrival, a situation involving a broken thermometer was in progress. Crews began treating the incident as a chemical spillage due to the possibility of the thermometer containing mercury.

A safety cordon was put into place, whilst environmental services, police and ambulance colleagues were informed of the situation.

"Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to photograph the thermometer to determine the manufacturer.

"After photographic inspection by a chemist, it was determined that the thermometer contained an alloy based metal substitute, and therefore was not a danger to the occupants of the property."
