Safety checks mean opening of city centre Wetherspoons delayed indefinitely

The long-awaited opening of the city centre Wetherspoons has been delayed indefinitely.

The famous pub was set to open its doors on Lower Abbey street this Friday, but safety checks mean that it will remain closed for the forseeable future.

The opening date is set to be between now and the end of the month, with Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon even hopeful of an opening as early as next week.

He said: “ The opening of the Wetherspoons pub, The Silver Penny, in Lower Abbey Street, Dublin, will now not open on Friday June 21 as planned.

“This is due to the fact that final safety checks have still to be signed off and then presented to the licensing board for their final approval.

“We cannot give a new opening date at present, but are hopeful that the pub will open sometime next week.

“We apologise to all those looking forward to the opening of The Silver Penny and promise that we will do our utmost to have the pub open as soon as possible.”
