The world's top 10 low-cost airlines for safety have been named in a survey of budget carriers around the globe.
Low-cost operators have helped millions of people sample air travel for the first time or to take trips they would otherwise be unable to afford.
AirlineRatings.com has identified the best low-cost airlines for safety in 2020 from the more than 400 carriers it monitors.
The list includes Flybe, which had hubs at Birmingham, Exeter and Manchester Airports, filed for administration in March 2020 and ceased all operations. Also included are Vueling, Wizz Air and Westjet that all flew into the UK before the latest coronavirus restrictions.
Until its sale to Connect Airways in 2019, it was the largest independent regional airline in Europe. Flybe provided more than half of UK domestic flights outside London
The AirlineRatings top 10 safest low-fare carriers for 2020 are, in alphabetical order:
- Air Arabia
- Flybe
- Frontier
- HK Express
- IndiGo
- Jetblue
- Volaris
- Vueling
- Westjet
- Wizz Air
All of the low-cost carriers included in the top 10 have passed the tough International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) and is re-evaluated every two years.
International Air Transport Association members are required to pass IOSA but many budget operators are not part of IATA and choose not to undertake the audit.
AirlineRatings editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas said: "“Those LCC’s that have decided to use IOSA show an additional commitment to safety."
Carriers in the top 10 must have had a fatality-free record for the past 10 years and received reach standards outlined by AirlineRatings.
