'Safer than Tesco's'- Top trainer Fergal O'Brien's view as racegoers return to Warwick

Leading trainer Fergal O'Brien said Warwick's meeting felt safer than going to his local supermarket.

The track hosted a crowd trial with limited numbers and strict Covid-19 measures in place this afternoon, on the eve of fresh proposals from the government.

O'Brien, who struck with Templepark (11/4f) in the 2m 4f handicap chase, believed the meeting was a success.

"I felt safer than going to Tesco's," he said.

"Everything worked well, it was lovely to see people back on a racecourse.

"Warwick and The Jockey Club have done a great job and I think other tracks can do the same."

O'Brien, top of the championship with 27 winners, was based in the green zone with his trainer colleagues and jockeys.

For its crowd of 474 spectators, there were around 50 hand sanitizers, a rearranged car park to accommodate social distancing and a one-way system.

The figure was made up of 150 annual members, 124 hospitality bookers and up to 200 owners – but 30 people who intended to go were held back by localised lockdowns.

The day's main talking point away from coronavirus was a 1741/1 double for Kayley Woollacott's team, courtesy of Especially So (66/1) and Tipalong Tyler (25/1).

JP McManus' silks heading the pack were a more welcome sight for punters, as seventh race winner Go As You Please (7/2f) was one of four favourites to oblige.

Warwick's general manager Andre Klein said: "Everyone I have spoken to has said they feel safe here.

"We are really pleased with how it has gone. Hopefully it's a stepping stone for future meetings as we have shown what can be done."

Newmarket will welcome 1,000 spectators each day from Thursday for the Cambridgeshire meeting.

Beyond that plans are rather up in the air, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson reviews the country's response to the virus.
