Safe Kids organization stresses ATV safety measures

The Fayette County coordinator for the Safe Kids organization says safety recommendations for operating all-terrain vehicles can’t be overstated. This past weekend, 14-year-old Timothy Hickson of Harlan died when the ATV he was operating overturned and landed on him. Safe Kids’ Sherri Hannan said mentoring young operators is an important practice.

“You know parents really taking time to instruct and supervise and make sure that a young driver on an ATV actually gets some good experience, just like you would in a car,” said Hannan.

The Fayette County coordinator of Safe Kids noted her organization is not suggesting all-terrain vehicles shouldn’t operate in Kentucky. But, Hannan added there are important safety measures to consider, particularly with young, inexperienced operators. She said helmet use is required by law on all public roadways.

“That can be legislated and enforced on a road, like a state road or something like that. But, if it’s on your own personal property, there’s no legislation that really can be enforced during that time,” said Hannan.

In addition to helmets, Hannan said riding gloves, tall boots, and chest protectors are all beneficial safety equipment. The registered nurse said the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no one under 16 operate an ATV.
