Safari park staff 'extremely saddened' after wild dogs escape during storm and kill 16 animals

A pack of wild dogs slaughtered 16 animals after escaping from a safari park during Storm Ciara.

Six deer and 10 sheep were killed when the dogs at West Midland Safari Park managed to get into a neighbouring enclosure through a gated entrance which had been damaged by the storm.

Birmingham Live reports that staff had a personal attachment to the animals and were left "extremely saddened" by the incident, which took place in the early hours of February 9.

The wild dogs were later returned to their compound unharmed.

A spokeswoman for the safari park said: "The wild dogs entered the neighbouring compound through a gated entrance which had been damaged in the storm which hit Worcestershire earlier that morning.

"Given their personal attachment to our animals, our staff are extremely saddened by the incident.

"At no point was there a risk to public safety and there was no danger of any animals escaping the park's perimeter fencing."

With Storm Dennis set to batter much of the country on Saturday (February 15), the park spokeswoman said the situation would be closely monitored "in the best interests of our animals and public safety".
