Blair Drummond Safari Park begs Nicola Sturgeon to lift lockdown restrictions

The boss of a Scottish safari park has called for permission to open up to visitors after warning it could take up to four years to claw back lost business.

Blair Drummond's Hector Muir believes it's unfair outdoor sites like his, near Stirling, remain shut while Scots are able to congregate outside and meet at beaches.

Zoos and wildlife parks cannot open until the middle of next month at the earliest under current Scottish lockdown restrictions. Parks are already opening up in England.

"We're seeing a one-size-fits-all re-opening plan in Scotland - a safari park or a zoo is re-opening at the same time as a pub or a restaurant," he said.

There is a five-mile guide on travel but Muir said his park, on 160 acres, is able to follow social distancing and health rules already.

Muir, in an interview with BBC Radio Scotland, said tourism is suffering.

"These seem to be very different businesses grouped together," he said. "A plan which took into consideration the size and the venue and the location, and the risk, would possibly be better suited.

"I think it's having a hugely detrimental impact on Scottish tourism and the ability, long-term, for business to operate."

Blair Drummond is celebrating its 50th anniversary but now faces a long road back to recovery.

Muir said: "I don't think it will be terminal but I do think it will take three to four years of really tough decisions to get back to where we were at the start of 2019 in terms of employment and investment."

The First Minister has already lifted some restrictions and is moving Scotland to phase two, with greater freedoms, today.
