Sadness over 'Loss of culture' as flats to be built on site of Nottingham's former PlayWorks building

Planning permission has been granted to convert a former Nottingham community hall into flats.

PlayWorks, which was based in Alfred Street North, St Ann's, once organised play sessions for youngsters to bring communities together.

The site, also known as St Andrews Hall, was most recently used as a rehearsal and recording studio.

The charity, however, announced it was closing back in March of 2019 after difficulty securing new funding.

As a result the community hall has been unoccupied ever since and Hockley Developments will now redevelop the site into 16 apartments.

Reacting to the news, Alan Marcus, 55, of St Ann's said it was "a loss of culture".

"It is a community space so I would've liked to have seen it kept like that with a new kick starter for funding from somewhere.

"But homes make money so I can see why it's been done.

"It's a shame as it's a loss of culture with the recording studio gone."

St Andrews Hall, which is a Victorian brick built structure, will be retained for the most part with the flats built within it through a conversion.

Jason Richardson, 43, of St Ann's added: "It's good that the site will be given new life to a degree. Of course you'd want others to be able to benefit from it given its history but I can see why it's been done.

"The building needs a use."

Planning permission was granted at the end of May by Nottingham City Council's planning committee.

Applicants Hockley Developments said at the time of submitting their application: "The conversion of St Andrews Hall will help bring a new lease of life to the existing structure, which has been vacant since March of 2019.

"During the time of disuse, the structure has become rather derelict in appearance which is a shame considering the structure’s historic Victorian aesthetic.

"Therefore, the preservation of the St Andrews Hall frontage is an important aspect of this development, as it holds a substantial historic presence on Alfred Street North considering the other period structures in close proximity, such as the ‘Oldknows Factory’'".
