Sadness as popular independent store moves out of Nottingham city centre

An independent store in Nottingham will close its doors temporarily after the owner received a notice a few months ago.

The business owner of Shop Zero on St Jame's Street has announced the sad news through a Facebook post.

Sarah Maloy has opened the shop in March 2019, and will close its doors in the premise for the last time on Wednesday (August 4).

The 51-year-old has started the business in 2018 from a passion for protecting the environment.

She said: "It was likely to move it to somewhere else, but I would have like it to be on my own terms."

Ms Maloy was given three months notice to leave the premises from the YMCA who own the Malt Cross.

She added: "This made things a little tricky for us.

"We are very grateful to YMCA because they have supported us during the pandemic.

"We will miss other businesses on this road who have been by our side all this time."

Shop Zero is a store that promotes sustainability by selling eco-friendly items.

The shop's policy is that customers bring their own containers to be refilled or can buy items from local producers.

Customers will be able to pick up their items from the Bead Shop on Market Street or Ms Maloy's house in Sherwood.

Ms Maloy added: "We will still be operating as an online shop and with click and collect services.

"We are looking for a bigger place because we want to stock more items, however we would have liked to have more time to find the right place.

"Our customers are very supportive and it is great to see that they will still be shopping from our store.

"When a door closes, another one opens - so hopefully this means that we will reach to even more people than before, from Nottingham and all across the country."

Simon Brighty, Malt Cross Trustee and Group Mission and Marketing Executive Director at Nottinghamshire YMCA, said: “Whilst we cannot discuss private contractual matters concerning our tenancy agreements, we can confirm that all decisions made have been respectful of our contract conditions.

“As our charity moves out of the pandemic, we are looking to the future of the Malt Cross and any decisions made form part of our plans for the building around protecting and enhancing our movement’s wider societal change footprint going forward.

“We are touched to hear the owner of Shop Zero feels that our YMCA has been very supportive of her during the pandemic and we wish her the very best of luck with her fantastic business.”
