Sadness as butcher closes 'due to unforeseen circumstances' after more than 30 years

Business owners have voiced their sadness as furniture was removed from a popular butchers shop which operated for more than 30 years.

A sign was placed in the window of Michael Carter's Fresh Foods, in Mapperley Top, in recent weeks saying the shop was closed due to 'unforeseen circumstances'.

When Nottinghamshire Live visited on Tuesday, August 24, removal workers were in the process of gutting the unit, which is now empty.

Sue Ridout, 73, manager of MySight charity shop next door to Michael Carter's said: "I'm horrified, they have been here for years, longer than us anyway."

"It's so sad to see a family run business with lots of loyal customers go. It is very sad for the community."

"I am worried that Mapperley is turning into a bar and pub strip. So many local businesses are struggling." she added.

The reason behind the closure has not been confirmed, but the sentiments of Ms Ridout were echoed by Tony Gregoriou, 58, owner of The Plains takeaway.

He owns the building that Michael Carter's is based in, and told Nottinghamshire live he plans on turning the premises into a new Greek takeaway.

"Everything is closing down in Mapperley. Supermarkets are closing all the small businesses. It is very sad to see them (Michael Carter's) go."

"Parking is a big problem. I've spoken to the MP (Tom Randall) about it. People who aren't from the area don't know about the car parks."

"The more businesses that close, the less people will come up. It is already very quiet. There is nothing for people to see or do except pubs and bars."

Nottinghamshire Live attempted to contact the owners of the butchers.
