Sadness as body pulled from River Trent in 'tragic' incident

People have voiced their shock and sadness after a body was found in the River Trent following a major search operation.

Police were called to the river at West Bridgford at about 9.15am on Saturday, November 6, and after thorough searches, a body was recovered on Sunday morning.

Visitors to the Victoria Embankment believe there should be more CCTV in the area and described the incident as 'tragic'.

Jason McCormack, a support worker from Sneinton, said: "It is a tragedy and we are all deeply saddened by the incident.

"All of our thoughts are with their family at this difficult time."

"I run here quite a lot and I can say that it is very badly lit and there are not enough CCTV cameras around here.

"I do worry about other people at night when I go running because it is not very well protected."

The 45-year-old added: "There is no reason why there could not be a barrier installed alongside the river - I do not think it would spoil the park's atmosphere."

Water and land searches were carried out in the Welbeck Road area of West Bridgford, with a police helicopter and a specialist drone team also at the scene.

Ruthie Frances, 47, a visitor from Derby, saig: "It is horrible and it should not be happening but some extra security measures could go a long way.

"It is an awful incident and hopefully it is not a regular occurrence."

Unemployed Shaun Abd, of Arnold, has voiced his concerns after the incident and said: "It is scary - I come here quite regularly at night for walks.

The 32-year-old added: "It is sad but I would say that more CCTV cameras would definitely go a long way.

"And they should also be installed under the bridge as well."

After being called on Saturday evening, searches continued on Sunday, November 7, where an underwater and specialist search unit van, two fire engines and police cars were seen at the scene.

David Cowan, a managing director from West Bridgford, 70, added: "It is shocking and we are all worried about it.

"It must be hard for their family as well."

People living nearby said they were shocked to see a 'heavy police presence and ambulance' in the area and were wondering what happened.

Ali Khan, a student teacher from The Meadows, 26, added: "It is shocking and surprising.

"I hope their family is alright."

"We are shocked, and deeply saddened.

"And all our thought go to their family because it is a horrible incident."

Inspector John Lees, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Officers are on the scene and working to establish the circumstances.

“A post-mortem examination and formal identification will be carried out in due course and a file prepared for the coroner.”
