Sadness and shock as much loved former Cefn Hengoed teacher and Neath Port Talbot county councillor Steffan ap Dafydd dies suddenly

Tributes are being paid to a Neath Port Talbot councillor who suddenly died last week.

Councillor Steffan ap Dafydd, who died on July 10, was a "passionate champion" for the Aberavon ward since being elected in 2017.

He was a life-long campaigner for the Labour and trade union movement.

It is understood that the councillor, who was originally from Maesteg but lived in Port Talbot for many years, collapsed last week.  The exact cause of his death has not been made public yet.

A tribute, which was released on Aberafan and Baglan Moors Labour Facebook page read: "Steffan taught in Cefn Hengoed for a number of years, and it has been truly heartening reading the tributes that have been pouring in from former pupils.

"He will be dearly missed by the Aberavon and Baglan Moors Labour branch, and our thoughts are very much with Linda and the family at this tragic time.

"Goodbye, Steffan, and thank you for all you've done."

Neath Port Talbot Council leader Rob Jones said that he will be "greatly missed".

"It was with great shock and sadness that I learned on Friday of the death our friend and colleague Councillor Steffan ap Dafydd.

"As you will know he was a proud champion both of the Aberavon ward he represented and of the Welsh language.

"He will be greatly missed, and my heartfelt condolences go to Steffan's family at this very difficult time," he said.

Former pupils have also been paying tribute to Steffan on Facebook.

Wayne Hendra, posted: "Gutted to hear this news, Steffan taught me in Glanafan, and he was an amazing teacher and character, probably the nicest and most genuine people you will ever be lucky enough to have ever met, RIP Steffan you will be missed but never forgotten."

While Laura Barnes added: "Rest in peace sir, a wonderful teacher and a great person. Always had the time of day for his pupils at Cefn Hengoed even when we moved on from school. Always remembered me.

"True gentleman. Thoughts are with his family and friends."
