Sadness after Wirral's Light Cinema announces 'difficult decision'

A beloved Wirral cinema has announced it will be shutting its doors 'until further notice' after the final showing on Christmas Eve due to coronavirus pandemic.

The Light Cinema in New Brighton made the announcement on social media saying it had been a 'difficult decision'.

They added that with uncertainty over the tier system, the cinema based at Marine Point would be closing until further notice.

In the statement on its Facebook page, cinema bosses said: "We've made the difficult decision that we'll be closing our doors after our final showing on Christmas Eve.

"With all the uncertainty with the tier system alongside a rather sparse upcoming film slate, we then won't be reopening until further notice.

"We'll continue to review the situation and will keep you informed of any changes as soon as we can."

Dozens of regular cinema goers responded to the post saying they were 'gutted' at the news.

Mark Goulding wrote: "Gutted for you guys but looking forward to being there Christmas Eve!"

Pol Andy Madhouse commented: "Best cinema, anywhere, period! Here's wishing you all the best possible Christmas, and fingers crossed you're welcoming us all back as soon as practicably possible."

Simone Peter replied: "Shame, but understandable. Enjoyed going back to the cinema for a few times pre-lockdown, and thought we might after Xmas. Will see if we can come in this week. The Light is absolutely one of the best things about the regeneration of New Brighton."

Geraldine Luxton wrote: "Oh no came to watch Wonderwoman the other day. Brilliant film. So sad your closing, hope you can open again soon. Love the cinema you had done very well keeping it feeling safe and clean. Thank you."

Natalie Carroll commented: "What an absolute shame. We love coming to see a film whenever we can, your staff are always so lovely and accommodating. Fingers crossed it won't be too long for you."

And Gemma Hughes said: "Oh how sad. We went last night and had the pizza deal. I felt very safe, staff were wonderful and I had a lovely evening. Fingers crossed you open up soon. My heart goes out to all the staff."
