Sadiq Khan: We shouldn’t roll out red carpet for Donald Trump’s visit

Sadiq Khan reignited his row with Donald Trump today by saying the US President should not be honoured with a state banquet hosted by the Queen.

The Mayor of London, who is not on the guest list for the event, said the country should not be “rolling out the red carpet” for the president.

He told LBC radio’s James O’Brien: “History tells us only two presidents have had a state visit and I don’t think President Trump is in the same class as those two.

"It’s possible to have a working relationship without having a state banquet.”

The Queen hosted state visits from US presidents George W Bush in 2003 and Barack Obama in 2011.

Mr Khan also said he supported Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s decision to snub his invitation to the state banquet, saying he would have done the same.

Mr Khan and Mr Trump clashed after the President attacked the Mayor for doing a “terrible job” in response to the 2017 terror attacks.
