Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has warned the capital is at a "crucial stage" in the fight against coronavirus.

London could be designated as Tier 2 of the new Covid-19 restriction system by the end of the week, as the number of coronavirus cases hits more than 7,700 a week.

It means the capital could see a city-wide ban on social mixing between households in homes, or being limited to two households. Leaders are also discussing travel being limited to “only essential” trips.

"Covid-19 cases are increasing in London. We know our city is at a crucial stage in our fight against coronavirus," Mr Khan said on Monday.

"Please don't ignore the warnings from the experts. Follow the rules, wear a face mask, wash your hands and stay a safe distance from others.

"We can turn this around."

Mr Khan said the virus was a "very real threat" and urged Londoners to "act with caution".

The capital is understood to be at a “tipping point” in fighting the disease, and ministers, City Hall and health chiefs are analysing a string of data streams for London to decide if action is needed.

A move towards a ban on household mixing is expected to heavily depend on the trend in the growth of cases in the capital in coming days.
