Sadiq Khan tells parents it's "your job" to stop children carrying knives

Parents must confront their children if they think they are carrying a knife, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has told them.

He said: “If you’re a mum or dad and somebody’s leaving the house with a knife, it’s your job to stop them... it makes them less safe not more safe.

“All of us have a role to play - parents, uncles and aunties, teachers, youth leaders, politicians, the police, social services, local government, regional government, national government – all need to work together.”

The Mirror reported that stabbings in the first quarter of this year have almost doubled since 2015 – 662 attacks, a rise of 95%, with 66 killed.

We are campaigning for the Government to tackle the knife crime epidemic by boosting police numbers and powers.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid said last week it was “a challenge that affected all of society”.

He said “agencies must come together in a co-ordinated, wide-reaching and long-term effort”.
