Sadiq Khan hits back over Donald Trump's stance on abortion saying the President's views are 'opposite of London’s values'

Sadiq Khan hit out at Donald Trump over his views on abortion today saying the US is “rolling back” the reproductive rights of women.

As the president touched down in London this morning, the mayor said Mr Trump’s values were the “complete opposite of London’s values and the values in this country”.

The president recently outlined his “strongly pro-life” views on abortion amid controversy over strict new laws banning abortion in almost all cases in Alabama.

Mr Trump said he was against abortion except in cases of rape, incest or a “serious health risk” to the mother.

In a video, released by Elle UK magazine, the mayor said: “What we are seeing in the USA is a rolling back of the reproductive rights of women.

“We’ve got a situation now where some states in the USA are making it almost impossible for women to have the right to have an abortion.

“One only has to look at the history books to realise the consequences of women not having the right to choose over their own bodies. What we can’t afford to do is return to backstreet abortions.

“What we can’t afford to see is a return to the situation in yester-decades where you had women having no control over their bodies.”

Mr Khan, who is not on the guest list for the state banquet, added: “We respect women and we think they are equal to men.”

The two men have had a war of words since 2017 and over the weekend Mr Khan likened the president’s language to the “fascists of the 20th century”.
