Sadio Mané has signed for Liverpool on a five-year contract in a deal worth around £30m.

“Today is a big day and I am very happy to sign for one of the biggest clubs in Europe,” Mané told the Liverpool website.

“It’s a club that has won a lot of trophies and has a big history. Now I am looking forward to meeting all the staff and my team-mates and starting the season.”

The Senegalese forward will join a well-trodden path of players to leave St Mary’s for Anfield in recent seasons following Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Rickie Lambert.

He was dropped by Ronald Koeman in January amid interest from Manchester United but despite going four months without a goal, ended last season as the team’s leading scorer with 15 in all competitions.

Southampton have already acted to replace Mané, completing the signing of Norwich’s Nathan Redmond on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £10m.

Mané, a product of the Metz academy who moved to St Mary’s in 2014 for around £12m, emerged as Liverpool’s main transfer target after Jürgen Klopp was frustrated in his attempts to lure his primary target, Mario Götze, from Bayern Munich.

He follows Loris Karius and Joel Matip, as well as Marko Grujic, in joining Klopp’s squad ahead of the new season.
